Melvin Jones Award

What is the Melvin Jones Award?

In 1917, Melvin Jones, a 38-year-old Chicago business leader, told members of his local business club they should reach beyond business issues and address the betterment of their communities and the world. Jones’ group, the Business Circle of Chicago, agreed.

After contacting similar groups around the United States, an organizational meeting was held on June 7, 1917, in Chicago, Illinois, USA. The new group took the name of one of the invited groups, the “Association of Lions Clubs,” and thus began the rich tradition of service that Lions Clubs are known for around the world.

Lions Club International Foundation and the Melvin Jones Fellowship Lions around the world are united by a great spirit of giving and dedication to helping others. As the official charitable organization of Lions Clubs International, Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) supports Lions’ compassionate works by providing grant funding for their local and global humanitarian efforts.

A significant portion of the funds raised by LCIF comes through the Melvin Jones Fellowship. Our club honors our most dedicated and generous members with a nomination to the Melvin Jones Fellowship. The nomination is accompanied by a monetary donation from the JC Host Lions Club to LCIF.

The Melvin Jones Fellowship is the highest form of recognition that a Lion can receive for their charitable work.

Haywood Snipes Award

What is the Haywood Snipes Award?

The Haywood Snipes Award was named in honor of the late Past District Governor Haywood Snipes of Poplar Bluff, Missouri. PDG Snipes chaired the Missouri Lions Sight Committee through the 1960s and early 1970s, during which time he helped raise funds to expand the Missouri Lions Eye Bank and to build what is known today as Saving Sight.

The legacy of Lion Haywood Snipes is honored when clubs make exceptional financial contributions to Saving Sight.  A Lions Club meeting certain financial marks is allowed to elect a person to this Society.

In the JC Host Lions there have been 96 Presidents, 45 Melvin Jones recipients (with three receiving the award twice), but only eleven Haywood Snipes recipients.

This is an exclusive club.

Infamous Stories

Carlos Graham was the first recipient of the traveling trophy that bears his name.

Carlos Graham unknowingly “loaned” his vehicle to a recently released inmate from the Cole County Jail. Carlos left the keys in his vehicle during a City Hall meeting across from the Cole County Jail. The Vehicle was recovered in Springfield, Missouri.

Matt Schofield:  During the 2017-2018 Lions Year, Lion President Mark Schreiber held a trivia event during one of the Club Meetings. Mark had recycled the questions from another group’s presentation earlier in the day. Matt Schofield heard there was to be a repeat and “obtained” the answers from the morning session, successfully completing the Lions test with positive results.

Ron Jordan:  During the 2018-2019 Lions Year, for the first time in many years, there was a “contested” race for the 2019-2020 Presidency. First Vice President Dorene Jackson had a long standing “love-hate” relationship with Ron Jordan, so Ron decided to run against Dorene, including “candy bar bribes”, only to drop out of the race at the last minute, leaving the election uncontested.

Larry Brandhorst:  Larry has served as Treasurer for JC Host Lions (and many other Clubs) for a very long time. Larry enjoys the accounting aspect. The Club members often note if Larry gets a new car or if one of his reports is off by a mere 25 cents and threaten an audit. We all appreciate Larry’s hard work and abilities, but always like to give him grief about his “undisclosed compensation” as Treasurer.

Dan Bernskoetter annoyed Mark Schrieber.

Past President Todd Miller for being MIA after he left office.
